Hate Groups Fueled By Intolerance and GOP Are on The Rise!

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which has been tracking hate groups such as the KKK since the early 70’s, the number of hate and anti-organizations have significantly grown since last year. According to the center, the main causes are racial tensions, economic inequality, and of course, Barack Obama.

In addition, the center speculates that the hate groups fueled by the extremist, vitriolic rhetoric from the GOP during this presidential election year, will continue to rise in 2012.

The largest growth came from the Patriot Movement, a collection of rural based right wing extremist groups who were linked to terrorist Timothy McVeigh: According to the center’s report, the Patriot Movement, also known as the Militia Movement has grown from 824 groups in 2010 to 1274 groups in 2011. From the years 2000 to 2011, hate groups other than the Patriot movement have nearly double from 602 to 1002.

It is estimated that nearly 300,000 Americans are now participants of some sort of hate group. In addition, another 300,000 Americans participate in what is known as the Sovereign Citizens Movement. Members of this movement ignore most laws, pay no taxes, and do not carry a drivers license. Most of their arrests and convictions stem from white collar crimes such as fraud.

While most known hate and anti-government organizations have not been arrested for, or accused of committing violent crimes, the violence does seem to be escalating. In 2011, police have been involved in gunfights with known members of these during routine traffic stops. In addition, 4 men linked to hate groups in Georgia have been arrested for plotting to obtain explosives, as well as produce the extremely toxic poison Ricin. Meanwhile in Michigan, 7 members of the right wing extremist group Hutaree are on trial for hatching a plan to kill several police officers as well as create a huge violent insurgency throughout the state.

Furthermore, the Southern Poverty Law Center reports that known LGBT hate groups have grown from 17 to 27 in the past year, while known Muslim hate groups have tripled from 10 to 30.

This report gives us a very disturbing yet unsurprising accounting of just how many nasty, narrow minded people live in our country. The numbers would have been even higher, if the report hadn’t left out Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the Republican Party. These three groups alone can account for a majority of the hatred geared toward anyone who isn’t a white, rich, christian male. Then again, it’s probably safe to say that a vast majority of the groups mentioned in the reports are merely factions and subsets of the anti-everybody but us GOP.

Hatred and separateness have brought humanity to the present condition.

The sad thing is what you said – “unsurprising.” It’s just going to get worse.

I hated to sound jaded with that comment, but you’re right, it’s only going to get worse. 😦
