It’s Time For OWS to Take it To The Next Level!

From Leon Trotsky- Marxism in Our Time- 1939

“The rate of a democracy’s development and its stability are in inverse proportion to the tension of class contradictions… The uncontrollable deterioration in the living conditions of the workers makes it less and less possible for the bourgeoisie to grant the masses the right of participation in political life, even within the limited framework of bourgeois parliamentarism.”

At first, the fledgling Occupy Wall Street movement was ignored by the corporate controlled media; there was barely a word spoken in the press about it for days. Then after the movement gained traction and began to spread to other cities, it was ridiculed as some band of socialists looking for a handout because they were tired of working. As the movement went global and drew yet more followers, it came under brutal attacks by local police who are controlled by local government and federal authority. People were arrested, beaten, and in a few cases, murdered. In the meantime, the OWS movement vows to stay strong and peaceful.

Here’s the thing, although the OWS movement is absolutely right in its motives, I’m not sure that it’s correct in its actions or inactions as the case may be. The top 1% in this country, as well as countries around the world, maintain their grip on the world’s wealth and resources through strong arming the rest of us. It’s been that way for thousands of years; it will continue to be that way for as long as man walks the earth. The rich are not motivated to change; why would they be? They’re rich for Christ’s sake. It’s up to the 99% of us who are barely scraping by to motivate them to change. The only way to motivate them to change is to continually stay in their smug spoiled faces, and disrupt the very system that they so love and vigorously defend.

OWS is off to a good start; they have captured global attention and struck fear into the gazillionaires who run our country. Why else would OWS be under attack? The wealthy are afraid of them. Now it’s time to step it up. I’m not advocating violence, but I am advocating a modicum of aggression. OWS needs to remain active; in actuality, it needs to become a political force. It needs a dynamic leader who is capable of becoming the face of the movement, much like Dr. King and Malcolm X were for the Civil Rights Movement of the sixties. It needs leaders who are capable of energizing the public, as well as operating within the political realm. Otherwise, OWS will be beaten into submission, like so many other passive protest movements that have come before it.

It’s time to make a decision for the OWS; remain passive with an organized protest here and there, or go balls out and attack the very system that it rails against. During the Progressive Era of the early twentieth century, the Socialist movement which was lead by Eugene Debs, gained thousands of followers every year until the Sedition Acts of the Wilson administration wiped it out. People want economic and social parity; we’re just brainwashed by the top 1% that it’s not the “American Way. “ Nothing could be further from that money driven truth; my hope is that OWS will continue to shine a spotlight on this truth that is so very self evident.

It’s time to do away with the mega wealthy Koch suckers of the world, before they do away with us. We do outnumber them after all.

Read into that however you want.

    Interesting thougths!
And I’m thinking too – that Zuccotti might be better off terminated for now. The point has been made, it was a huge success, the national conversation has changed, and the positions before the 2012 elections are already altered quite a bit. (Probably most important for the Senate and House races – I’m thinking Obama bags a second term by a narrow default anyways).
So a next step for OWS is needed – and while the “pressure” behind the movement is only growing more for each day no matter what, let’s just hope it’ll remain well managed. I watched a documentary on 1789 the other day – and that went horribly wrong in part because of wrong leaders. http://wp.me/pGUJ8-3ka

Interesting points to ponder … like this one – “although the OWS movement is absolutely right in its motives, I’m not sure that it’s correct in its actions or inactions as the case may be.”

It just seems to me that they need a dynamic leader to be the face of the movement. That can make all the difference between getting beat down or becoming a relevant political force.
