RIP Macho Man Randy Savage.
I just heard from my partner that Macho Man Randy Savage was killed in an automobile accident in Tampa Florida today. He was 58 years old. 😦
Born Randy Poffo, Macho Man was a natural athlete; he was originally a catcher, working his way up through the St. Louis Cardinals farm system. If I remember right, a serious injury cut short his baseball career, and he took his dynamic persona to wrestling. His energy and high flying tactics in the ring immediately made him a fan favorite, even if he was bad guy inside the squared circle.
Hulk Hogan is often credited with making professional wrestling the juggernaut it is today: However, without his flamboyant arch-rival and later ally, The Macho Man, his, and pro wrestling’s popularity would not have reached the heights that it did.
RIP Macho Man; Many of us will be honoring you with an “OH YEAH!” while we snap into our Slim Jims tonight.
Here’s a clip of my boy wrestling Andre The Giant back in 1988:
