If you live in South Florida, you may want to check out this article: Why the City of Miami Is Doomed to Drown | Politics News | Rolling Stone. It’s scary as hell. With sea waters rising due to climate change, it’s likely that South Florida is going to sink rather rapidly into the sea as early as 2030. Miami will be gone, the Everglades will be gone, and the Turkey Point nuclear power plant is likely to become another Fukushima. Florida is currently a Tea Party state, and warnings from climatologists are going largely ignored down there. Little is being done to prepare for the rising seas, other than throwing good money after bad in efforts to update decades old pumping and desalinization systems. Miami and the resort towns around it will sink, and within decades become a new age Atlantis.  The article poses some realistically scary scenarios for Miami, as well as challenges that other low lying coastal cities such as Washington DC, New York City, and Boston are currently facing now, as well as in the future. If you believe in global warming, this article is a sobering must read.

Dear (Fill in The Blank) Zealots – Shut The F#ck Up!

Fuck you

Fuck you (Photo credit: Stéphane Giner)

No one is coming to take your guns – please, shut the fuck up.

You don’t need an assault gun with a grenade launcher to hunt deer or protect your home – please, shut the fuck up.

The Muslims and atheists are not coming to blow up your churches or rob you of your religion- please, shut the fuck up.

Gays and lesbians getting married do not rob you of your rights, nor do they violate the sanctity of marriage- please, pretty please with whipped cream and a cherry on top, shut the fuck up.

Obama is not a socialist, nor is he coming to take your big screen TV to give to a poor person. Corporate profits have soared under Obama- please, shut the fuck up.

Climate change is real, and this planet is in grave danger of dying – please, shut the fuck up: your blustering over cyclical temps is greatly contributing to our carbon foot print.

Obama is not out to steal your liberties: He’s too busy killing innocent people of color in third world countries with his killer robot planes – please, shut the fuck up.

Reagan and Bush spent way more, and contributed more to the deficit than Obama – please, shut the fuck up.

Supply side economics doesn’t work – please, shut the fuck up.

Women deserve to have control over their own bodies – please, take your patriarchal, misogynistic views, and shut that whole fucking thing down.

Getting more people to work is more important than austerity: More workers equals more taxpayers and consumers, which equals more revenue – Mitch please, shut the fuck up.

God is indeed in our schools: if a student so desires to bring god with him or her to school, she or he has every right to do so – can I get a please shut the fuck up?

Most people don’t want “gifts” from our government. What they want is a chance for a good education, a good job, and a good life – please, help yourself to a Mitt Romney sized cup of shut the fuck up.

Liberals are not some communist horde looking to tear down America. We simply want to level the playing field in order to make sure that everyone has a chance to work hard, and build America up – please, right wing pundits, shut the fuck up.

If I left any wing nuts out, don’t worry I’ll get to you – in the mean time have a seat in yonder corner, and SHUT THE FUCK UP!

A Real Ice Breaker: The Military is Preparing For The Effects of Global Warming in The Arctic Circle.

As the debate over global warming in political, economic, and scientific circles rages on, there is one rather sizable faction that is convinced that climate change is a certainty: The military. As the polar ice cap continues to melt, military exercises involving many arctic circle countries are already taking place. Just last month, Norway conducted one of the largest military exercises ever, involving 16,300 troops from 14 countries. This exercise, named “Exercise Cold Response,” was used for training in everything ranging from extreme cold weather warfare to fighting terrorism. Two months ago, the U.S, Canada, and Denmark held similar exercises. In addition, military leaders of the U.S, Canada, Russia, Iceland,Denmark, Sweden, and Finland will be meeting in May to discuss potential security issues in the Arctic region.

So why, in the face of the rapidly melting ice cap, is security an issue? Why else? Oil and natural gas. It is estimated that 13% of the world’s undiscovered oil, and 30% of the world’s untapped natural gas lies beneath all that melting ice. As shipping lanes open in the great white north, the exploitation of its resources will not be far behind. KA-CHING!

This is why the energy companies are trying to dispute global warming; they know damn good and well that there are a plethora of natural resources underneath all that ice. It’s in their best economic interest to continue to destroy the planet. The collective military powers around the arctic circle understand this, and are rapidly preparing for oil wars that will most certainly ensue in the decades to come.

Angry Poetry Week: Trajectory of the ‘Civilized’ – Michelle Beltano Curtis

Our next poem for angry poetry week comes from Michelle Beltano Curtis, who writes the blog Carving Out a Voice. Michelle writes about a number of issues, including themes about feminism, the environment, otherness, sexuality, aging and illness, in a very distinctive unmitigated voice. Her work has appeared in Ginger Piglet, Voice It!, Lambda Literary Review, and more.

This particular poem from Michelle rails against humanity’s systematic destruction of our planet in the name of Man’s one true god, capitalism. It contains disturbing imagery, and is a very haunting, angry condemnation of the nearly irreversible damage we have managed to wreak upon our planet in a very short time.

Without further adieu, I give you:

Trajectory of the ‘Civilized’
Michelle Beltano Curtis
 In honor of Allen Ginsberg

                        I

The inventor’s hands are speeding cars
following roadmaps of the damned,
metal and glass and gleaming light
of power plants and toy factories
expelling great gasps of endless vapors
hexavalent chromium, strontium chromate,
toxins in our air tongues can only trip on,
turn lakes and rivers neon green, vapid blue,
unthinking orbs mark the journey
skies a burnished haze of baby shit at dawn,
and aren’t the evening skies of dusk delightful
in rainbow shades of obliteration?
An unnatural world in endless trails of duplication
we buy for bottom dollar with the click of a mouse.
Instant gratification for our ultimate destruction.
Hidden at last in heated ash of an angry Sun
we forgot to fear, respect, worship,
trailing incense, canted whispers,
aberrant kisses for Moloch as the forgotten
ends of some unjustified means bring us closer to the end—

to pyramids of rotting flesh, burnt offerings
for Madagascan cockroaches
in endless ecstasies—putrid meat
in razor jaws, and we’re on top where
always they insisted we should be,
skin excoriated by excruciating heat,
querulous children with castigated raisin eyes.
Blank sockets occupied once by pale marbles of
millennia ago— before we discovered the interstellar cacophony,
invented macros for love and invention, bought-sold-bartered
love, friends, sex, emotion, through airwaves
once meant for the simple act of sustaining life, breath.

                        II

Pale marbles in a vertical reality of grasslands and hippopotami
with angular jaws echoing like caverns
their trembling of equine energies,
organic angels without harpsichords
or unrequited love or beards and skirts
or adam’s imperfection; that fucking rib.
No vindicated harpes of eve
or revelations of marriage beds or boys in backseats
no sin on their minds none existed.
Just thumping flesh and pulsing tides
of tangled ecstasy and moaning limbs,
fucking and crying; enraptured motion and ethereal air
amid fat raindrops or crystalline stalactites
of winter’s clean, crunchy breath.

Death was life, cyclical journey of cleansing,
fertilizing the roots of new creation
within the ruins and the world cracked open
in splendiferous greens and vibrant hues of red, ochre, azure,
earth’s children huddled in the bosom of her
protective ranges; no us, them,
only all—in the occupation of survival
in the same rhythm of the world, freed
in the youth of the world to flourish to harvest to die
again and again.

                        III
Moloch, they worship you and they will sacrifice us all, and in our blind
passivity we deserve your sweltering damnation.
In the end, only that which birthed us will survive to mend
herself among cooling surf and settling rock to create anew
her own treasures of tree and pheasant and monarch.
And in a million years the scientists and archeologists who begin to discover
remnants of a world torn asunder will someday shake their heads at our
foolhardiness while they marvel at our cleverness
all the while fear brings a palsy to their people upon the revelation –
of greed among their own.

How’s The Weather? Not So Good!

As we all know, 2010-2011 has seen some of the most severe weather in centuries. Climate Progress gives a recap of the mayhem, as well as some insight for 2012. As you read the article, make sure you check out the related links. They provide some very sobering articles.

If you don’t want to read the article at Climate Progress, here’s some of the low lights:

This April was the 4th warmest on record, in spite of the cooling effects of La-Nina.

Record droughts are hitting Texas, Alberta Canada, and Central China, causing wildfires, shortages in drinking water, and wreaking havoc on agriculture. In the case of China, almost 1,400 reservoirs have dried up, as well as large portions of the Yangtze River.

In other areas of the world, massive flooding is the worst it’s been in over 300 years. 11 straight months of rainfall has devastated Columbia, South America, displacing over 3 million people. Flooding in Manitoba, Canada has caused 1 billion dollars in damages, while the flooding of the Mississippi and its tributaries is still laying waste to the South and Midwest.

The prediction for 2012 is more dire: With El-Nino expected to be in top form, average global temperatures are expected to climb even higher, with an increase of water vapor by 4% due to evaporation, the highest rate ever! This increase in water vapor will create even more instability in our atmosphere, leading to more severe flooding in some areas, and drought in others.

Of course, Global Warming and Climate Change is not a problem. We should probably go out and burn some more carbon emitting fossil fuels. Maybe we ought to light up a few nukes while we’re at it, just in case our road to environmental destruction isn’t fast enough.

“It’s Like Building on a Heap Of Tofu.”

There is a very interesting article on Yahoo this morning. It seems as if the Japanese government has been covering up many safety violations and accidents in their nuclear power industry. Go figure. Since the early 60′s, when the Japanese government decided to ween itself off its dependance of foriegn oil, the nuclear power industry has enjoyed a cozy relationship with federal regulators. There has been a history of accidents and cover ups in Japan that is only rivaled by the U.S. relationships with the oil industry. The list of Japanese power plant accidents is a long one, and includes

_In 1999, fuel-reprocessing workers were reported to be using stainless steel buckets to hand-mix uranium in flagrant violation of safety standards at the Tokaimura plant. Two workers later died in what was the deadliest accident in the Japanese industry’s history.

• At least 37 workers were exposed to low doses of radiation at a 1997 fire and explosion at a nuclear reprocessing plant operated in Tokaimura, northeast of Tokyo. The operator, Donen, later acknowledged it had initially suppressed information about the fire.

• Hundreds of people were exposed to radiation and thousands evacuated in the more serious 1999 Tokaimura accident involving JCO Co. The government assigned the accident a level 4 rating on the International Nuclear Event Scale ranging from 1 to 7, with 7 being most serious.

• In 2007, a powerful earthquake ripped into Japan’s northwest coast, killing at least eight people and causing malfunctions at the Kashiwazaki Kariwa nuclear power plant, including radioactive water spills, burst pipes and fires. Radiation did not leak from the facility.

In 1978, control rods at one Fukushima reactor dislodged but the accident was not reported because utilities were not required to notify the government of such accidents.

In 2006, Tepco reported a negligible amount of radioactive steam seeped from the Fukushima plant — and blew beyond the compound.

There are currently 54 nuclear plants in Japan, with 2 more under construction, and 11 more plant proposals to build. All in a heavily populated nation that is a virtual earthquake and tsunami magnet. It appears that Tepco built all these plants while cutting corners, and ignoring many industry standards. Tepco and the Japanese government have managed to put the entire island, and now possibly the planet at a danger level of epic proportions. Thanks to them, it probably will not be long until we all become luminescent like so many glo-sticks at an ecstacy laden rave.  Considering the history of corruption in all of our energy industries, if this is President Obama’s idea of clean energy for America, I’ll pass. Thanks but no thanks.

The Nuclear Reactor in Northern Japan is Near Full Scale Meltdown!

The news from Japan keeps getting worse; so far it has been estimated that there are over ten thousand dead, and over ten thousand people missing. Several towns and cities have been completely wiped off the map, while the #3 economy in the world has plunged into its worst level since WWII. The downward spiral of the Japanese economy will probably send the global economy into deepening recession. Meanwhile,  there is a potential nuclear catastrophe brewing that would make the economic worries seem minute.

Two more explosions were reported at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant this morning, releasing even more radioactive particles into the atmosphere. Experts claim that the levels of radiation are safe, but as far away as Tokyo, people have been instructed to stay indoors and seal off their houses as much as they can. There have been 4 explosions now at this plant since the 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck late last week.

Meanwhile the cooling pool at the #4 reactor has been reported to be boiling, sending radioactive steam into the atmosphere. This cooling pool is what keeps the nuclear fuel rods from overheating, and if all that water evaporates, the rods will be exposed and enter into a critical meltdown stage. Experts claim that while the crisis is worse than the 1979 incident at Three Mile Island, so far it is nowhere near the level of Chernobyl. How comforting.

The potential meltdown at this plant is not only affecting Japan, the claimed small amount of radiation that has been released so far is 4 times the normal amounts that already exist. This high amount of radiation will cause long term effects including bone cancer and leukemia, as well as birth defects in fetuses. Here’s the kicker; this will not only occur in Japan, this will happen around the globe! Radioactive particles have already entered the wind patterns that blow east across the Pacific; I would bet that radiation levels are already climbing around the Pacific Rim, including the West coasts of North, Central, and South America. If that plant blows, I’m betting we’re all fucked. It may not affect everyone immediately, but most certainly long term exposure to the fall out is going to have severe ramifications across the world.

I pray that the technicians left behind at Fukushima Daiichi can miraculously get this catastrophe under control; not just for Japan’s safety, but for the safety of the entire planet. Yes, it could be that serious. If you believe in god, pray. If you don’t believe in god, keep the people of Japan in your heart, and send all your available positive energy to the brave workers left at the plant who are trying to get this meltdown under control. They need it, we all need it.

Here’s the crux of the matter; the earth is a living, breathing creature just like us. What we’re doing to it is putting it in a dangerous position. While the earthquake may not be a direct effect from the abuse that we are heaping upon our Mother Earth, it is a sign that our planet has begun to fight back in an attempt to restore balance. I hope I’m wrong, but the mass extinction that we are trying so hard to achieve in the name of capitalism may be here earlier than predicted. Its catalyst is sitting in Northern Japan, and could trigger such an extinction. Fasten your seat belts; we’re in for a bumpy ride.

Here’s some footage of the tsunami that hit Japan after an 8.9 earthquake hit off the eastern shore.

Here’s a clip reporting on the aftermath.

Please keep the people of Japan in your heart today.

Scenes From a Flood:The Ohio River Visits Our Neighborhood.

Many thanks to my partner for taking time from grading  her english papers to get these pics. They’re from the neighborhood just below our house. The building on stilts is a grade 1-12 public school. Its closed for the rest of the week.
