Pope Benedict To Resign As Head Of The Church.

It looks like the Vatican is going to have to dust off it’s papal retirement package. For the first time in 600 years, the pope has resigned his position. Citing his advanced age and declining health, Pope Benedict XVI announced that he will relinquish his duties as of February 28th. Benedict was elected pope in 2005, after John Paul II elected out of his papal retirement package by dying.

Pope Benedict’s legacy is not so good: his reign was marred by clerical scandals in the Vatican, as well as rampant cases of sexual abuse committed by many of his acolytes. Furthermore, in a time when church laws are continuously criticized as outdated, Benedict doubled down on conservative ideology. His papacy was highlighted by his over the top critical views on subjects such as Islam, homosexuality, and the role of women in the church. As pope, Benedict managed to piss off everybody not named Rick Santorum.

Benedict is the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415. Gregory’s resignation came during a time of scandal as well. His resignation was an effort to end The Western Schism, in which the church was split between two papacies for decades. Gregory’s resignation was in tandem with the Council of Constance, which ended the schism, and resulted in a reunited church under one pope.

The Christian Right is Trying to Chick Fil A The Gay Away.

In addition to serving up lousy chicken, Chick Fil A is serving up a piping hot dish of hatred and bigotry. While many right wing Christians are defending the Cathy family’s right to free speech by showing up in droves to eat some really shitty food, they are either ignoring or covering up the fact that Chick Fil A has contributed millions to Christian hate groups who exist solely to discriminate against the LGBT community.

Since 2003, Chick Fil A’s charitable arm, the WinShape Foundation has donated over 8 million dollars to several anti gay Christian organizations under the pretense of upholding traditional family values. The list is a who’s who of hate groups:

• Marriage and Family Foundation
• Fellowship of Christian Athletes
• National Christian Foundation
• New Mexico Christian Foundation
• Exodus International
• Family Research Council
• Georgia Family Council

In 2010, nearly 2 million dollars was donated by WinShape to these 7 groups, who in turn used the money to promote their homophobia. In addition, Chick Fil A VP Dan Cathy launched his own hate group in 2007: Formerly known as the Marriage and Family Legacy Fund, the Marriage and Family Foundation is a Cathy funded, Cathy led project of the Anti-Gay Marriage CoMission. This coalition of anti marriage equality groups features hate filled homophobic lunatics such as Alan Chambers from Exodus International, and Barry Sheets from Citizens For Community Values: These two men make Rick Santorum look like a progressive!

If Dan Cathy wants to make moronic statements, that is indeed his right. In turn, I as well as many like me have the right to criticize him, as well as not spend our money on his nasty food. However, when the Cathy family has a documented history of promoting hate and inequality, that’s where many of us draw the line. It’s not about the First Amendment in this case: It’s about fighting back against a corporation who so willingly leads the way in the war against a group of people who wish for nothing more than to enjoy a life filled with love and equality.

The Cathy’s are not the victims, they are the oppressors. As such, they deserve to be under attack for their deplorable ideology and actions. They have earned whatever retribution that comes their way.

Maybe we can gay away the Chick-Fil-A ;)

Anders Breivik Went On Trial Today: Pleads Not Guilty

The trial of Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik began Monday morning in Oslo. Although Breivik admitted to the June 22 bombing and shootings that killed 77 people, a defiant Breivik entered a plea of self defense. Breivik stated to the court that ” I admit to the acts, but not criminal guilt.” Breivik insists that his actions were taken against the left wing party of Norway in order to protect the country from multiculturalism and Islam.

Breivik stood before the court with a closed fist salute and stated “I don’t recognize Norwegian courts because you get your mandate from the Norwegian political parties who support multiculturalism.” If declared competent to stand trial, Breivik stands to serve a maximum of 21 years in prison if convicted.

In related news, Mitt Romney is expected to name Breivik as his running mate in the 2012 presidential election. When asked, Romney is rumored to have stated “although Breivik isn’t as hard nosed as Rick Santorum, Anders is the perfect man to help my party close society in this country for good.”

Even though he is no longer a presidential candidate, Mr. Frothy Mix is still determined to keep his name in the spotlight by still more acts of conservative depravity. This time he further raised the bar of ass holiness by registering his three year old terminally ill daughter in the NRA, so that he could score political brownie points with one of the largest conservative voter bases. What a douche.

The Vitriolic Best of Pat Buchanan

Pat Buchanan

Image via Wikipedia

Sexism, misogyny, racism, bigotry, homophobia, elitism, anti semitism, ultra religious fanatic: Pat Buchanan is the total conservative, hate spreading package. He ‘s Rush, Newt, Rick Perry, and Rick Santorum combined into one narrow minded, foul smelling package. He is a prick to the magnitude that even the Dalai Lama wants to punch him in the nuts. Why exactly, did MSNBC think it was ever a good idea to put him on the same airwaves as Rachel Maddow and Chris Matthews ? Who the hell knows- at least he’s gone… for now.

The following list is the top ten offensive statements vomited forth by Buchanan while he was on the MSNBC payroll: A huge golf clap to Think Progress for sharing!

Without further adieu, I share with you:

THE BEST of BUCHANAN

1. Wanted to close the borders to protect white dominance. As he wrote in his 2006 book State of Emergency: “If we do not get control of our borders, by 2050 Americans of European descent will be a minority in the nation their ancestors created and built.”

2. Blamed lower test scores on minorities. In his most recent book Suicide of a Superpower: Will America Survive to 2025?, he blames minorities for dragging down the country’s test scores. “[T]he decline in academic test scores here at home and in international competition is likely to continue, as more and more of the children taking those tests will be African-American and Hispanic.

3. Claimed Jerry Sandusky’s atrocities are because of “Homosexual marriage.” Buchanan appeared on a right-wing radio show on November 15 to make some convoluted comparisons: “Let’s take this Penn State thing…these horrors, there’s an organization that marches in the gay pride parade in New York called—used to—called the North American Man Boy Love Association, which advocated voluntary sex along the lines of exactly what was going on at Penn State. Many of our political icons have marched in that parade right behind that NAMBLA float […] This is now, homosexual marriage is now the civil rights cause of the decade.”

4. Said the Jewish population in the United States dropped in the 90s because Jews aborted all their babies. Buchanan explains that the decline in the American Jewish population during the 1990s (a decline that a Brandeis study says never occurred), “is a result of the collective decision of Jews themselves. From Betty Friedan to Gloria Steinem in the 1970s to Ruth Bader Ginsburg today, Jewish women have led the battle for abortion rights. The community followed.”

5. Asserted Anders Breivik, who murdered 77 people including 69 teens in Norway, “may have been right.” Buchanan called Breivik a coward, evil, and cold-blooded, and then proceeded to defend his twisted rationale for the killings: “As for a climactic conflict between a once-Christian West and an Islamic world that is growing in numbers and advancing inexorably into Europe for the third time in 14 centuries, on this one, Breivik may be right.”

6. Claimed that all great nations punish the gays. In a Human Events column, Buchanan attacked California’s 9th Circuit Judge Vaughn Walker after his ruling of Proposition 8 as unconstitutional as a “judicial tyrant,” before going on to explain that “through history, all the great religions have condemned homosexuality and all the great nations have proscribed or punished it. None ever placed homosexual liaisons on the same plane as traditional marriage, which is the bedrock institution of any healthy society.

7. Penned “The Affirmative Action Nobel.” That’s the title of Buchanan’s October 13, 2009 column on Townhall.com in which he claims that President Obama’s Nobel Prize was simply the result of affirmative action. And the column only got worse from there: “They have reinforced the impression that Obama is someone who is forever being given prizes — Ivy League scholarships, law review editorships, prime-time speaking slots at national conventions — he did not earn.”

8. Argued that Poland and the United Kingdom had it coming in World War II. Buchanan seems to suggest in a 2009 column that World War II—and all the atrocities that accompanied it—was really the fault of Poland and Britain, for refusing to engage in diplomacy with Germany. “Why did Warsaw not negotiate with Berlin, which was hinting at an offer of compensatory territory in Slovakia? Because the Poles had a war guarantee from Britain that, should Germany attack, Britainand her empire would come to Poland’s rescue.”

9. Dabbled in Holocaust denial. Pat Buchanan danced alarmingly close to denying key facts of the Holocaust. In a 1990 column for the New York Post, he defended convicted Nazi war criminal Ivan Demjanjuk (whom he later compared to Jesus Christ) against charges from Holocaust survivors that he was guilty of murder by accusing the survivors of misremembering all of it: “This so-called ‘Holocaust Survivor Syndrome’ involves ‘group fantasies of martyrdom and heroics.’ Reportedly, half of the 20,000 survivor testimonies in Yad Vashem memorial in Jerusalem are considered ‘unreliable,’ not to be used in trials[…]The problem is: Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody.”

10. Argued Hitler was an individual of “great courage.” That’s just one of the quotes that the Anti-Defamation League attributes to Buchanan in their compendium of offensive remarks from Buchanan over the years. In 1977, he qualified his labeling of Hitler as racist and anti-semitic by adding that “he was also an individual of great courage, a soldier’s soldier in the Great War, a leader steeped in the history of Europe, who possessed oratorical powers that could awe even those who despised him[…]His genius was an intuitive sense of the mushiness, the character flaws, the weakness masquerading as morality that was in the hearts of the statesmen who stood in his path.”
