Here’s a terrific synopsis from Rachel Maddow concerning the House Republican devised government shut down. Unsurprisingly, they have been gleefully planning this since 2010, when the GOP took over house majority.
It’s estimated that the government shut down will cost the tax payers twenty one million dollars a day. In addition, the shut down will slow down the economy to the tune of three hundred million dollars a day. Meanwhile, the stock market began to plummet before the shut down even went into effect. In addition, an estimated eight hundred thousand government workers are now on leave without pay. Furthermore, vital social programs such as WIC will be shut down, leaving many who rely on government assistance to fend for themselves. Looking forward to retirement? Not so fast my friend. You’re application for Social Security most likely will not be processed until the shut down ends. Want to go to a national park or museum? Forget about it, they’re shut down as well. The absurd list of those affected by the shut down goes on and on.
This is our conservative party at work folks – or in this case non work. They are diligently and systematically destroying our country in order to undermine our president. This isn’t a mere temper tantrum over Obama-care: This is treason. This is one of our parties demonstrating a complete disregard for the country they supposedly have sworn to protect and work for. The government could have easily been kept operational if the Republican Party would have budged one iota on their ridiculous demands. The House and Senate could have easily passed a spending bill that did not include the defunding of Obama-care, John Boehner wouldn’t allow it. The GOP isn’t looking out for the American people, they’re looking out for themselves, as well as the likes of the Koch brothers. This traitorous act by the Republican Party is akin to the boy with the football going home until everybody lets him play quarterback. Let me tell you something boys, the game you’re trying to shut down went on without you: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act went into effect while you were collectively packing your footballs and going home. Your little game of chicken accomplished nothing, other than seriously damaging our economy. It’s not Obama nor the Democrats who are suffering from your childish and churlish behavior: It’s millions of people in this country who will suffer.
At the very least, the GOP leaders who are leading this crusade against John Q Public simply must be voted out in 2014. At the most, they should be led away from their tax payer subsidized day care in shackles. In closing, I would just like to say this to John Boehner and the rest of his petulant cronies:

Even though he is no longer a presidential candidate, Mr. Frothy Mix is still determined to keep his name in the spotlight by still more acts of conservative depravity. This time he further raised the bar of ass holiness by registering his three year old terminally ill daughter in the NRA, so that he could score political brownie points with one of the largest conservative voter bases. What a douche.

My favorite political punching bag Rick Santorum is back at it again. His target this time is fellow Republican John McCain.
McCain, who is the top Republican on the Senate Armed Forces Committee, stated last week that “Enhanced Interrogation” techniques (water boarding) of Al Qaeda’s #3 leader did not provide useful information leading to the capture of Osama bin Laden. In fact, he stated that the “enhanced interrogation” of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed ” actually produced false and misleading information.”
In response to McCain’s statements, Santorum declared during a radio interview on Tuesday that “McCain doesn’t understand how enhanced interrogation works.” Wait, what?
If anyone should understand enhanced interrogation techniques (torture) should work, it would be McCain, a former Vietnamese POW for 5 1/2 years!
Once again, Santorum is displaying his vast ignorance on a topic he knows nothing about. To call out John McCain on torture techniques is akin to trying to tell Chef Boy R Dee how to make bad Italian food. In other words, Rick the dick has no fucking idea what he’s talking about. Again.
I think rather than McCain trying to explain what “enhanced interrogation” is, maybe he should demonstrate torture methods on Santorum. Who knows, maybe the former war hero will get the former senator to admit to buggering fellow homophobe Fred Phelps. That should prove just how reliable extracting information by torture really is.

“How many more gay people does God have to create before we ask ourselves whether or not God actually wants them around?”
This quote was given by State representative Steve Simon to the Minnesota house committee, in an effort to convince the Republican dominated legislature not to insert a same sex marriage ban into their state constitution. The measure passed in spite of his impassioned plea.
For those who believe in god, this quote should ring true; if we are all ostensibly god’s creatures, then to deny those of same sex orientation the same rights as heterosexuals is a sin, right?
For those of us who are atheists, the same quote applies. Simply replace the word “god” with nature. It still makes sense, does it not? Understand this: same sex orientation is a natural occurrence in the animal kingdom, and we are animals!
To deny same sex marriage is to deny human rights. Steve Simon gets that. I wish there were more Steve Simons in the world. I also wish there were less pious homophobes such as Rick Santorum, or the Minnesota legislature in the world. I’m not holding my breath though; I would probably suffocate waiting for such a sweeping change in misplaced morality.

It’s going to be a busy day for my partner and I. We’re heading back to Columbus to march in the protest against the proposed de-funding of Planned Parenthood, and then we will be joining the protesters against SB5. I’ll be taking the trusty camcorder to get some pictures and footage of both rallies. Hopefully I’ll get more shots of the action and less shots of my feet. I really need to take a photography class!

A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it, has earned – this is the sum of good government. ~ Thomas Jefferson
Tuesday is going to be a big day for my partner and me. A protest will be staged in Ohio’s capital city Columbus in order to show Gov. John Kasich that stripping state workers of their right to organized labor is no more acceptable than it is in Wisconsin. We’re going to be there alongside protesting workers, letting our voices be known. We will be boarding a bus provided by boldprogressive.org , which is a group fighting fiercely for progressive change in our government. The bus will board here in Cincinnati, and will take us and hopefully several others, to stand united with angry state workers in Columbus.
Ohio Senate Bill 5 which is proposed by state senator Shannon Jones is due to come for a vote in Columbus and fast. The proposed bill, supported by Gov. Kasich would eliminate the collective bargaining power of state employees in Ohio. In other words here in Ohio our conservative lawmakers hate union labor just as much as they do in Madison. Like the state employees in Wisconsin, there are a lot of pissed off people who are starting to show up at the statehouse to let Gov Kasich know that they are outraged.
This is what democracy is about; according to Thomas Jefferson, the people have to right to speak out against and even overturn government when that government begins to infringe on our civil liberty. Collective bargaining has been a worker’s right for decades , and is ingrained in our country’s heritage. To take it away at this point is yet another step toward America becoming a military dictatorship, where no one has any rights whatsoever.
To paraphrase the deceased liberal historian and political activist Howard Zinn, “Democracy does not lie in our government, it lies within the people.” Every time we the people rise up peacefully to stop any oppression perpetrated by our government, Thomas Jefferson must look down upon us and smile. I hope he smiles upon us tomorrow.

I picked this up from Whatever Works. Legislation is under way to legalize the killing of abortion doctors in South Dakota. This is fucking insane. If anyone in the South Dakota legislature including the sponsor( Phil Jenson) should vote to pass this bill, they should be arrested and federally prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for inciting violence and murder. This bill is just as outrageous and disgusting as the murdering christian conservative zealots who think it’s ok to terrorize and kill those who do not think and act as they do.

I know old news is old, but there are a couple of interesting articles that Mrs. TFH showed me a few weeks ago that I have been trying to get to. The first article from the Huffington Post talks about Obama wanting to renew the country’s commitment to off shore drilling and “clean coal.” This is clearly a case of bowing to the Republican minority, who always display more balls than brains. From the article:
“Facing a Senate with a newly energized Republican minority, Obama has begun tailoring his energy policy to GOP-supported ideas, starting in his State of the Union address last week with calls for offshore oil drilling opposed by environmentalists and a bigger role for nuclear power.”
What in the name of Teddy Roosevelt is this about? I’m not naïve enough to think that we would completely transform our nation overnight to clean, efficient power sources such as solar energy overnight, but why are these avenues not even getting a mention? Clean coal? Offshore drilling? Nuclear power? This is not exactly taking the lead in reducing our global carbon footprint.
But wait, it gets even better. Check this out from Mother Jones: “We are aggressively pursuing nuclear energy,” said Energy Secretary Steven Chu on Monday when he rolled out the department’s budget proposal. Several days earlier, Chu had unveiled a blue-ribbon panel to assess nuclear waste disposal, seen as one of the most significant barriers to a nuclear revival. And in his State of the Union address Obama argued that creating new clean energy jobs “means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country.”
According to the article, Exelon, an Illinois based utility that supplies 20% of the nuclear power in the country, donated $210.000 to the Obama campaign. HMMMMM.
I don’t get it, why don’t we have the flux capacitor yet? We’ve had the technology since the early 80’s. Why isn’t Marty McFly secretary of energy? Of course if we had the model that runs on coffee grounds and banana peels, we would have troops in Costa Rica and Columbia instead of Iraq and Afghanistan.
After the presidential address, Chris Matthews mentioned that for an hour he forgot Obama is black. I’m starting to forget that Obama is a liberal.
